Building Confident Writers Through Sentence Stretching
Five of nine targeted Year 1 pupils were writing expanded, independent sentences within ten weeks.
Context
A Year 1 English class of 27 pupils, with nine working below expectations for early writing at the start of term.
Challenge
Many pupils were writing single-clause sentences with limited vocabulary and little detail, and lacked the confidence to extend their ideas.
Evidence & Diagnosis
I identified the need through independent writing assessments, book scrutiny and daily writing tasks, which consistently showed very short, undeveloped sentences.
Approach
I explicitly taught sentence stretching using Who, What, Where, When, Why and How prompts and the use of adjectives. I modelled writing in every lesson, built word banks and sentence stems, and gave immediate verbal feedback with time to edit.
Adaptation
The nine pupils below expectations received targeted scaffolding: extra word banks, sentence stems and closer feedback, within the same whole-class sequence, so no child was withdrawn from core teaching.
Impact
Five of the nine targeted pupils were writing expanded sentences independently by the end of the intervention. Average sentence length grew from one simple idea to two or three detailed ideas, with pupils using adjectives and conjunctions such as “and” and “because” more confidently.
Reflection
The modelling and immediate feedback mattered most: pupils improved fastest when they could edit a sentence with me in the moment rather than after the lesson. Next time I would introduce the “because” prompt earlier, as it unlocked the biggest jump in detail. I would keep the shared word banks: they gave the less confident writers a way in without waiting to be asked.
Supporting Evidence
Independent writing samples from start and end of the intervention, the sentence-stretching prompt pack and a simple writing checklist. Anonymised extracts are available on request; the approach was later reflected in a formal lesson observation graded Outstanding for differentiation and support.
“The dog ran.”
“The big brown dog ran fast across the park because it saw a ball.”
